Just a short one today in my ongoing quest to find the real ingredients of foods.
I was recently really excited to find some canned prunes at the grocery store that had a single ingredient: Prunes. No preservatives. And a brand name to boot! Here they are:
Well, I had a reaction the next day. So I looked at the website, and it lists the ingredients as “Pitted Prunes (Dried Plums” , Potassium Sorbate (As a preservative) SOURCE
I love the way they always tell you what a chemical in your food is for, as if its justification for poisoning you.
This led to the following exchange with SunSweet:
ME: I have had a reaction after eating your prunes. The can lists the only ingredients as prunes, but your website shows an additional ingredient. Which one is correct?
SUNSWEET: Thank you for your email. The Sunsweet Premium Pitted Prunes are preservative free, therefore the only ingredient in them is the prunes themselves. If you seem to be having a reaction, we recommend you visit your primary care physician.
ME: Thank you for the quick response.
However, your website lists another ingredient. So the website is incorrect?
SUNSWEET: Thank you for your email. It appears we made an error. The ingredients listed on the label on the website are up to date and accurate. Therefore, there is potassium sorbate in the Premium prunes as a preservative. We do suggest you seek medical attention for any reactions you may have.
I’m glad they care enough about my health to tell me to seek medical attention after eating their product. Twice.
I wonder if they’ll correct the cans?
Doubt they will correct the cans. Your experience proves how ridiculous it is to expect food labeling to be accurate. On the other hand, the FDA had a company recall tons of nut bars when the packaging failed to provide an allergen warning that it contained nuts!
